Ouray, "Little Switzerland"

Situated in the heart of the San Juan Mountains at the narrow head of a deep valley, Ouray boasts hot springs and a unique ice-climbing park and is home to some of the best ice climbing in Colorado.  With no nearby ski area to attract the tourism of other alpine Colorado towns, Ouray has kept much of its authentic turn-of-the-century charm. San Juan Skyway

While visiting the area, you should set aside time for this 232-mile road loop, known as Colorado’s most scenic drive, spanning elevations from 6,200-11,008 feet.  It offers majestic 14ers, deep valley, roaring rivers, and breathtaking views.  Start in Mancos and head north into the San Juan National Forest where you’ll see fresh, subalpine forests, historic mining towns, expansive cattle ranges, and present-day resort communities. Silverton

A small mining town in the midst of spectacular soaring peaks, Silverton is a national historic landmark and the terminus for the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.  Hiking, jeep and ATV tours, and river rafting are just a few of the many draws to this recreational paradise. (2 hours)
